LMS Administration Problems

There are 3 well-documented problems the classical, top-down administrator- driven LMS creates for a learning organisation:

  1. By being too role specific the LMS does not offer the necessary flexibility that reflects the many hats people wear in their organisation. (You can be an LMS administrator, a learner and an organisational manager, the fire safety officer and a nominated first- aider, right?).
  2. By creating unnecessary bottlenecks in the LMS and in your workplace. The ’Super-admin’ role is problematic for many reasons not least when illness, leave, a busy workload and time-poor individuals can’t attend to the needs of their end-users.
  3. End-users get frustrated and switch off because, once designated, the super admin doesn’t change or relinquish its role easily. The knowledge and training that has been accumulated, is never fully documented, shared or handed over. The system use and possibilities are lost with change in personnel.

  2. In places that require it, a central super-administrator role is valuable. Particularly to support those necessary top-down administrative workflows (because some organisations demand it), however these tools are simple and intuitive and not indicative of how we think the whole LMS should be designed to function
  3. Everyday administration rights are contextual to the task being performed. As on social media where a regular user can create and administer groups or lists, a teacher/trainer is able to administer the Networks/ Classes(groups) that they have created and the (groups) classes that they run
  4. Administration for specific groups can be delegated to members of that group safely, with full accountability and auditing. This enables some admin tasks to be performed by non-admin users within the UI.This Intuitive and rewarding user experience means we can expect more from Thinqi users enabling us to unpack and disentangle those classical administrative 'bottlenecks' and the frustrations these cause
  5. 21st century learning practices recognise learning & development as a diverse and multifaceted set of requirements best organised by the learners themselves. The LMS’s job is smooth the path to learning while ensuring that the necessary safety nets and audit trails are in place and effective. So while thinqi administration supports the central distribution of learning experiences; compliance courses and modules yet it also enables discovery, collaboration and the creation of learning
