PEDAGOGUE COMMUNITY

An Outline of the Pedagogue Community Model

The Pedagogue Community is an active content development community that consists of a number of UK City Learning Centres and LEA staff, including Salford, Manchester, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Doncaster, Ealing, Sheffield and Halton.

Currently the Pedagogue Community is actively engaged in developing interactive multimedia content for Key Stages 3 & 4 for the national curriculum (CDSM can supply details of this on request).

Staff involved are typically subject & IT enthusiasts, ASTs, and from Schools Improvement Services. They are subject specialists with an interest in developing materials for their area of the curriculum

Outside of compulsory education, Middlesex University has licensed Pedagogue and are now actively seeking other UK HEIs to mirror a similar activity for adult based learning programmes. Commercial organisations have also expressed interest in this model.

Managing an Effective Content Community

The Pedagogue Community is led by a steering group consisting of nominated individuals, selected to represent each organisation that has licensed Pedagogue from CDSM.

The steering group's role is to consider, identify and agree the subject areas to be built and supplied for the community by each LEA/organisation.

Each member agrees to develop and deliver Learning Objects for a subject area such as English, History or Maths (these areas can of course be broken down to smaller units of the subject area / curriculum).

The steering group also decides on the quality level and production values of the output and considers the feedback regarding issues such as quality of design, standard of learning content and pedagogy.

Content In Pedagogue

Once members have created Learning Objects in Pedagogue, they can publish and export their Learning Objects to a virtual learning environment, for delivery via a browser on the Web or on CD Rom.

If the content is developed to be shared for the community the author will simply select a tick box option which will then make the object available for storage in the Pedagogue Community's Sharezone repository.

The Sharezone Repository

Learning Objects created by community members are submitted to the Pedagogue Community Sharezone, a content repository provided by CDSM.

Sharezone has a number of facilities to enable the community to describe, classify, assess and communicate. There is a forum facility for partners to enable online community discussion. For example, there is a rating mechanism so that quality assurance can take place by the community. Sharezone is standards conformant in terms of its structured metadata and is easily searchable.

Important Content Ownership Issues

The content that is shared between the current Pedagogue Community members is exclusively intended for primary and secondary learners attending compulsory education.

The content is not commercially exploited. It is for the benefit of its members and the teachers and learners it represents.

If a member organisation chooses to commercially exploit Learning Objects that have been created in Pedagogue, they simply choose not to submit that content to the Pedagogue Community repository*.

Finally, Pedagogue Community content is not allowed to be distributed by an LEA employee or contractor outside of the geographic and territorial boundaries that the LEA serves.

*Organisations that license Pedagogue own the content that they produce using Pedagogue; CDSM has no rights to its content. CDSM provides a repository and administration services to moderate the community and its content. CDSM owns and licenses Pedagogue the content development tool and will actively promote the benefits of the Pedagogue Community.
