TECHNICAL INFORMATION

System Requirements

To run GCSE English Online, the minimum requirements are as follows:

Windows:

  • Windows 98 or above
  • 450 MHz Intel Pentium II processor (or equivalent) and later
  • 128 MB RAM

Macintosh:

  • Mac OSX or above
  • 500 MHz PowerPC G3 and later
  • 128 MB RAM

Also recommended are:

  • Desktop speakers / headphones
  • A monitor which displays 32 bit colour at a minimum resolution of 800 x 600 or above

Software Requirements

Adobe Flash Player

The Adobe Flash Player 7 or upwards

GCSE English Online requires the Adobe Flash Player version 7 to run correctly. If you do not already have it, you can install it here:

Flash is a rich multimedia technology, which allows delivery of engaging learning content, including sound, animations and video.

Version 7 of the Flash player has a 97.2% market penetration rate across Europe making it an almost ubiquitous technology for delivering multimedia content. Flash is bundled as standard with the new version of Windows, making it the global standard for multimedia on the Internet.

Handling Zip Files

Some content in GCSE English Online can be downloaded in the form of zip files. Though most modern computers come with software to handle zip files included, you may need to use third party software to open them. You can find more information on using zip files in the GCSE English Online FAQ:

Browser

Flash Player is supported in all modern browsers. If you want to see specific information about which browsers are supported on your platform (including Linux and Solaris), you can find it here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/systemreqs/flashplayer7/ .

JavaScript

If you are using GCSE English Online on a Virtual Learning Environment, you will need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser. JavaScript is not required to view the course if you are viewing it via the Internet or CD-ROM.

Server Requirements:

If you plan on hosting GCSE English on your servers, Flash is a standard web technology and is supported by most modern Window and Linux server systems. If you need help installing GCSE English Online on your server and cannot find a solution in the supporting documentation, email us at: gcsesupport@cdsm.co.uk.

You will need at least 450MB on your server to host GCSE English Online.

Standards Compliance:

GCSE English Online is SCORM 1.3 compliant and can be used with any SCORM 1.3 compliant (or above) Virtual Learning Environment.

Accessibility

Accessibility in Flash Player is rapidly evolving and Flash 7 and upwards provides powerful Accessibility support, including full Switch and Screen reader access. GCSE English Online also provides text and colour settings, to allow users to configure the appearance of the course to suit their learning style and personal preference.

CDSM recommend the use of JAWS as a screen reader for GCSE English Online.
